I Can’t Cut Your Hair is the debut album from NYC rapper Hester Valentine and Belgian experimental producer Outside House. Valentine’s intense mic presence and Outside House’s claustrophobic yet dynamic style blend into a rich, thoughtful, chaotic experience.

I Can’t Cut Your Hair is the sound of trying to find yourself in a city that is both too big, but also has no space for you. “My main intention when writing this record was to represent the anxiety and isolating feeling of personal responsibility,” Valentine explains. While keeping in tradition of classic east coast rap, Valentine and Outside House aim to create a familiar but distinct expression that not only establishes them as rising faces in an ever expanding underground scene, but also represent two artists seeing themselves realized on record.

With moody, insightful lyrical textures echoing NYC art rap collectives such as Backwoodz Studioz mixed with the brash, in-your-face attitude of artists like DMX and Ol’ Dirty Bastard, Valentine seamlessly interweaves intensely personal memories and impactful imagery over Outside House’s lynchian jazz rap textures. Using a sly sense of humor, Valentine balances direct and abstract, bold and vulnerable, melancholic and furious throughout this sprawling 14 minute project.
