I made this batch of songs between January 2017 and May 2019 with no real intention of releasing any of them. I make a lot of material for my own enjoyment and just to keep up my process chops, and I figured these songs would sit nicely against several hundred other pieces in the back of the vault. I’m a huge library music nerd, and consequently have a very large collection of rare/out-of-print library records. Each of these tracks is made from samples of 2-3 of these records at a time layered with various acoustic instruments I played (bass, baritone guitar, keys).

Last May, I saw a late-night Twitter post from Headtrip asking the universe for ‘summery’ songs, which I knew to be way outside his more aggressive, darker output, so I decided to send him a folder of these songs out of curiosity. I’m always interested in artists stretching beyond their comfort zones, particularly after undergoing big life changes, and I thought a ‘summery’ Headtrip record could go in a lot of unexpected directions. It was a left-field shot in the dark, but he said he dug the tracks I sent and was going to take the summer to write to them while working on Block Island. We passed edits back and forth for few months until it sounded perfect, and then we had a record called Dreamery.
